Kenya is stepping up its efforts to propel micro,
small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) into regional and continental trade
networks. Speaking ahead of the 26th East African Community (EAC) MSME Trade
Fair in Kigali, Rwanda, MSME Development Principal Secretary Susan Mang’eni
reiterated the government's push to connect local entrepreneurs particularly
women and youth with cross-border markets.
To back this effort, the ministry is seeking
approximately KSh 200 million from the National Treasury to directly facilitate
500 Kenyan MSMEs, with plans to expand the total delegation up to 1,000
exhibitors through strategic partnerships. Representatives from all 47 counties
will attend, including at least 100 young entrepreneurs from the National Youth
Opportunities towards Advancement (NYOTA) program to gain hands-on exposure to
EAC market dynamics.
MSMEs remain a vital pillar of the national economy,
contributing over 30% of Kenya’s GDP and sustaining millions of livelihoods. To
address financial bottlenecks, the state continues to rely on initiatives like
the Hustler Fund, Women Enterprise Fund, and Youth Enterprise Fund. Beyond
funding, the government is proposing new legislative frameworks to nurture
growing businesses for up to three years while expanding physical market
infrastructure nationwide with modern storage and retail spaces.
With the upcoming Kigali fair expected to draw
nearly 2,000 regional exhibitors, local business owners are encouraged to view
the platform as a direct opportunity to secure trade contracts, study regional
competition, and boost Kenya's overall export footprint across the continent.
