E Katerina Handa Enters Race for LSK Representative to Judicial Service Commission

By Maximilla Wafula ,  Sub-Editor, The County Diary News

Advocate E Katerina Handa has officially announced her candidacy for the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) female representative seat to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), pledging to champion integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of justice.

Handa, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya admitted to the Roll of Advocates in 2007, brings a wealth of expertise to the race. As a Partner at Gitonga, Kinyanjui & Co. Advocates, a legal scholar, lecturer, and certified mediator and arbitrator, her multifaceted career spans legal practice, academia, and alternative dispute resolution.

Speaking during a legal conference, Handa highlighted her active service across key LSK structures including the Commercial Practice, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and Editorial Committees. She noted that these roles have given her a front-row seat to the daily hurdles facing practitioners, particularly registry inefficiencies and protracted court delays.

“I have seen what lawyers go through, particularly when they interact with the Judiciary through practice and professional committees,” Handa stated, emphasizing that the LSK’s nearly 28,000 members deserve strong, effective representation at the JSC.

A central pillar of Handa’s platform is reforming the recruitment process for judicial officers. She urged the JSC to provide clearer shortlisting criteria and detailed feedback for unsuccessful applicants to ensure fairness and foster continuous professional growth for legal practitioners aiming for the bench.

“We want the Judiciary to be fairly transparent in terms of how they absorb people into the Judiciary,” she stressed.

If elected, Handa vows to establish direct engagement platforms between LSK members and the JSC, ensuring an independent Judiciary that remains responsive to both the legal fraternity and the general public.
