Bold New Era for Kenyatta University as Prof. John Okumu Installed as 7th Vice-Chancellor

 NAIROBI, KENYA - In a landmark ceremony held at the Graduation Square on Friday, Kenyatta University officially installed Prof. John Okumu as its 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor. Addressing a distinguished gathering led by KU Chancellor Amb. (Dr.) Francis Muthaura, Council Chairperson Prof. Clara Momanyi, senior government officials, faculty, and students, Prof. Okumu formally accepted the appointment with a pledge to drive holistic transformation anchored on unity, innovation, and institutional sustainability.

"I accept this responsibility not as a stranger to the institution, but as a servant who knows its history, understands its strengths, appreciates its challenges, and above all, believes deeply in its possibilities," Prof. Okumu stated, paying tribute to his predecessors for laying a solid academic foundation.

Outlining his strategic agenda under the theme "Forging Ahead in Unity, Excellence, Sustainability and Greater Global Impact," Prof. Okumu emphasized that modern university leadership demands bold adaptation to rapid technological shifts. Key priorities outlined in the Vice-Chancellor’s installation address include ethical AI integration and digital transformation, leveraging data analytics and automation across teaching, research, and administrative management while ensuring inclusive digital access for all students and staff. He also underscored the need for impact-driven research, repositioning multidisciplinary studies toward critical national and global challenges including climate change, health, food security, manufacturing, and digital technologies. Additionally, he emphasized commercialization and entrepreneurship, establishing robust incubation mechanisms to translate laboratory research into commercialized products, protected intellectual property, and viable start-ups.

To match the university’s academic ambitions, Prof. Okumu highlighted ongoing infrastructure developments, notably the construction of a modern G+14 affordable student hostel facility designed to accommodate 2,500 students. He further committed to expanding laboratories, library services, and ICT facilities through disciplined resource allocation and strategic public-private partnerships.

In his closing remarks, the new Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed his dedication to financial discipline, staff welfare, and robust governance, calling on all stakeholders including government bodies, industry partners, and alumni to collaborate in positioning Kenyatta University as a premier global institution.
