Democracy rarely dies in a single, dramatic moment
of collapse. It slips away quietly one subtle compromise at a time, disguised
as political convenience, temporary stability, or institutional expediency.
Civic rights are chipped away at the edges, public accountability fades into
the background, and widespread apathy gradually replaces active citizen
vigilance. By the time a nation awakens to the reality of its political
landscape, the vital democratic spaces that once protected the rights and
freedoms of the people have vanished.
As Kenya steadily moves toward the high-stakes 2027
General Elections, the General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of
Kenya (NCCK), Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui, has issued a timely warning against
this silent decline. He stresses that the ultimate antidote to democratic
erosion lies in continuous, uncompromising citizen participation. Peace cannot
be sustained through passive silence or by surrendering the nation’s destiny to
political elites; true peace is earned when citizens show up, ask difficult
questions, and fearlessly hold public institutions accountable.
Anchored on the theme of a Democratic, Credible,
and Peaceful 2027 Election, this national call to action emphasizes that
the sacred duty of safeguarding democracy belongs directly to every Kenyan.
Credible elections require active civic oversight long before ballots are cast
on Election Day.
To ensure the integrity of the upcoming electoral
process, citizens, civil society groups, and community leaders must actively
unite to reject money politics and resist the political bribery that undermines
national development. Voters must interrogate manifestos on substantive
socio-economic solutions, demand early transparency from electoral management
bodies, and engage in constructive dialogue. Participating in uncomfortable
national conversations is not a disruption of peace, but the very foundation
upon which lasting national stability is built. Safeguarding our democratic
space requires relentless vigilance, and the time for every citizen to step up
and defend the nation’s future is now.
