NAIROBI, KENYA - Wiper Patriotic Front and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition leader Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly condemned the abduction and assault of Standard Newspapers Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, calling it a direct threat to press freedom in Kenya.

Speaking after contacting the journalist and Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita, Kalonzo expressed outrage over the incident. Kiprotich was intercepted by armed, masked men along the Gilgil-Nakuru road on Tuesday night, September 1, 2026, before being abandoned hours later near Masinga Dam. He is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

Kalonzo emphasized that the constitutional rights of journalists must be safeguarded, warning against an escalating climate of hostility toward the media. He linked the heightened tension to recent political rhetoric and demanded the immediate arrest of Nominated MP Joseph Wainaina over alleged hate speech and incitement.

"Those who incite violence through their public utterances must face the full force of the law," Kalonzo stated, warning that reckless political discourse risks plunging the country back into the dark history of post-election violence seen in 2007.

The opposition leader called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to bring both the abductors and political orchestrators to justice.

Kalonzo was accompanied during the press briefing by Embakasi South MP Julius Mawathe alongside Wiper leadership from the Nairobi County Assembly.
