Kenya Airways (KQ) is set for another major executive transition following the resignation of acting Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Capt. George Kamal.

Capt. Kamal, who cited personal reasons for his decision, will step down from the national carrier after completing a 30-day transition period ending on September 30, 2026. He assumed the acting CEO post on December 16, 2025, following a three-year stint as the airline’s Chief Operating Officer (COO). Throughout his tenure, he played a critical role in stabilizing flight operations and executing the carrier's broader restructuring and turnaround strategy.

The Kenya Airways Board of Directors expressed gratitude to Capt. Kamal for his leadership, dedication, and service, wishing him success in his future endeavors.

To maintain leadership continuity, the board appointed Habil Waswani as acting Group Managing Director and CEO, effective September 15, 2026. Waswani currently serves as Company Secretary and Director of Legal Services and Regulatory Compliance.

Waswani brings over 24 years of corporate and commercial legal practice to the top desk. Over his five years at Kenya Airways, he has overseen key legal, commercial, and regulatory affairs. Before joining KQ, he served in senior leadership roles within listed banking and insurance institutions.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi, a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, and is a Certified Public Secretary. He also holds a Global Executive MBA from United States International University (USIU-Africa) in collaboration with Columbia Business School.

Concurrently, the board has launched a competitive recruitment drive to find a permanent Group Managing Director and CEO. Kenya Airways reaffirmed that its focus remains on operational reliability, returning to sustainable profitability, and driving long-term strategic growth.
