Faith Nguthu Calls for Dignity and Rights of Mama Fua Women in Eastleigh

NAIROBI, KENYA - UDA Nairobi Woman Representative Aspirant 2027, Faith Nguthu, has condemned the mistreatment of women working as laundry workers, popularly known as Mama Fua, calling for greater respect for their dignity, rights and contribution to society.

Speaking during a women empowerment engagement in Eastleigh, Nairobi, Nguthu said women working in the laundry sector play an important role in supporting families and sustaining the local economy. She stressed that their contribution should be recognised and their welfare given greater attention.

Nguthu observed that many Mama Fua women face challenges in their daily work, including difficult working conditions, limited financial opportunities and a lack of adequate support systems. She called for initiatives that would empower them economically and create opportunities for them to improve their livelihoods.

The programme focuses on supporting and engaging Mama Fua women within the Eastleigh area, providing a platform for them to share their experiences, raise concerns and discuss challenges affecting their work and families.

“We must create space to listen to women, understand their challenges and support initiatives that promote their dignity and economic independence,” Nguthu said.

She further urged stakeholders, community leaders and government agencies to work together in developing programmes that can improve access to financial literacy, skills training, markets and other opportunities for women engaged in informal employment.

The Nairobi women representative aspirant also dismissed claims that government housing projects are fake, urging Kenyans to support development initiatives aimed at improving people’s lives.

Nguthu said investment in housing and other public projects should be viewed as part of broader efforts to improve living conditions and create opportunities for ordinary citizens.

The engagement in Eastleigh is expected to provide an avenue for continued dialogue between Mama Fua women and stakeholders on issues affecting their livelihoods.

Nguthu reiterated her commitment to supporting women empowerment programmes and ensuring that women’s voices are heard in discussions on development, dignity and economic inclusion.
