November 11, 2024 – A significant legal battle over the takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by the Adani Group took a new turn today as a petition filed against the deal was postponed until November 27, 2024.
Speaking to the media outside the Milimani High Court in Nairobi, Senior Counsel HE Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, who is representing the petitioners, emphasized the critical importance of the matter, which he argued was shrouded in secrecy. Kalonzo, accompanied by fellow lawyers Hon. Eugene Wamalwa and David Adoli, expressed grave concerns over the deal, which he believes threatens not only the security of Kenya’s national infrastructure but also its long-term interests.
“This is not just about Jomo Kenyatta International Airport,” Kalonzo said. “We are dealing with key national assets—SHA/SHIF and KETRACO—that are integral to the security and well-being of the nation-state. The secrecy surrounding these deals raises alarming questions.”
Kalonzo's remarks come as part of a broader push to halt the Adani Group's controversial acquisition of key Kenyan infrastructure, which has sparked widespread debate across political and civil society circles. The petitioners, which include prominent political figures like Tony Gachoka, the Wiper Democratic Movement Party, DAP Kenya, and the Jubilee Party, argue that such privatizations could undermine Kenya's sovereignty and the long-term economic stability of the country.
“We are determined to fight not just for the present generation but for the future of this great nation,” Kalonzo added. "We cannot allow Kenya to be auctioned off to the highest bidder."
The legal team is taking a firm stance against the transaction, and the case will resume later this month, with a new court date set for November 27, 2024.
