Nairobi, November 9th, 2024 – The recent denials by Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Douglas Kanja, that the police are involved in the abductions, disappearances, and killings of young Kenyans have drawn sharp criticism from the opposition.
Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Party, and Hon. Kenneth Marende during the burial service of Baba Mwalimu Cllr. Eliud in Vihiga County.
Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, Leader of the People’s Loyal Opposition, lashed out at Kanja’s statements, urging him to "stop misleading Kenyans" and calling for immediate action and accountability for the disturbing trend of abductions and extrajudicial killings. Kalonzo insisted that police officers implicated in such crimes must face arrest and prosecution without delay.
The remarks were made at the burial of Baba Mwalimu Cllr. Eliud Josia Marende at Mumboha Secondary School in Luanda, Vihiga County. The late Marende, a former Luanda Ward Councillor, was the father of Speaker Emeritus Rt. Hon. Kenneth Marende. Key political figures attending the event included DAP-K leader Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand 'Babayao' Waititu, Jubilee SG Hon. Jeremiah Kioni, former Nairobi City Council Clerk Philip Kisia, and Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya.
In his address, Dr. Musyoka spoke about the "winds of change" sweeping across Africa, underscoring the need for urgent justice and reform in the country's security forces. He reiterated that those responsible for the growing wave of abductions and killings must be held accountable, irrespective of their power or position.
As the debate over police brutality intensifies, pressure mounts on the government to act on the rising tide of public concern over extrajudicial killings and abuses by law enforcement. Kalonzo's call for justice highlights the need for urgent reforms to protect the rights and safety of all Kenyans.
