Nairobi, Kenya – 13th November 2024 – In a significant move to enhance peace and security across East Africa, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo officially launched a regional programme aimed at preventing violent extremism. The event, held today at Kwetu in Nairobi, marked a major step in strengthening regional cooperation to address one of the region’s most pressing security challenges.

The programme, designed to promote peacebuilding and address the root causes of violent extremism, comes at a time of heightened concern over instability in the region. During the launch, Omollo expressed optimism that this initiative will play a pivotal role in fostering a safer, more secure, and stable East Africa.

"This initiative is not just a government effort; it is a partnership between governments, regional organizations, and global development partners. Together, we aim to strengthen our shared capacity to prevent violent extremism and build lasting peace across East Africa," said Omollo.

The programme was launched in collaboration with key partners, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Centre of Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (ICEPCVE). These organizations are working together to take a comprehensive approach to peacebuilding that addresses both the immediate and long-term drivers of extremism.

Key aspects of the initiative include empowering local communities, creating economic opportunities, enhancing regional security cooperation, and promoting inter-group dialogue and understanding. A central element of the programme is the creation of sustainable solutions to combat radicalization, which will ensure that East Africa is better equipped to prevent future conflicts
Omollo highlighted the importance of tackling the underlying causes of extremism, which often include poverty, marginalization, and lack of opportunity. He emphasized that regional cooperation and dialogue are critical to addressing these complex challenges.

"Preventing violent extremism is not just about security measures; it is about creating conditions for peaceful coexistence. We must work together to empower individuals, especially the youth, and build societies that are resilient to the forces that promote division and violence," Omollo stated.

The programme is expected to have far-reaching effects, not only in Kenya but across the broader East African region. As the launch unfolds, experts and stakeholders are hopeful that this regional collaboration will set a positive example for addressing violent extremism globally, offering a pathway toward lasting peace and stability.

Today's launch serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of collective action in the fight against violent extremism and underscores the urgent need for East African nations to unite in building a peaceful, secure, and prosperous future for the entire region.
