NAIROBI, KENYA
- A profound sense of loss swept through the nation's political and reform
circles today as opposition leaders, civil society pioneers, and distraught
family members gathered at the Lang’ata Muslim Cemetery to lay to rest one of
Kenya’s finest constitutional minds, Hon. Zein Abubakar.
The solemn Janazah (funeral prayers) and subsequent
burial drew a heavyweight delegation from the United Alternative Government.
The leaders were led by Wiper Democratic Movement leader H.E. Kalonzo Musyoka
and DAP-K leader Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, alongside former Chief Justice Willy
Mutunga and prominent Islamic spiritual leaders who gathered to pay their final
respects.
Hon. Zein Abubakar, a revered political scientist
and selfless public servant, leaves behind a towering legacy etched into the
bedrock of Kenya’s modern democracy. As a prominent Commissioner in the
historic Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC), Abubakar was one of
the brilliant architects whose tireless deliberation birthed the progressive
2010 Constitution.
For decades, his intellectual rigor fueled the
country’s second liberation and reform movements. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder
with progressive forces, anchoring strategic operations across successive
opposition coalitions including CORD, NASA, and Azimio la Umoja. Between 2012
and 2017, he took his cross-border passion to Arusha, serving with distinction
in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), where he championed regional
integration, anti-corruption, and institutional accountability.
Even in his later years, Abubakar remained a vital
anchor for national stability, playing a central role behind the scenes during
the 2023 National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) bipartisan talks. Until his
demise, he served as the Head of H.E. Kalonzo Musyoka’s Presidential
Secretariat, offering unparalleled strategic guidance and policy coordination.
Speaker after speaker described the late statesman
as an indispensable structural anchor of alternative leadership. The leaders
present extended their deepest condolences to his family, recognizing that
while Zein Abubakar has rested, his lifelong quest for a just, equitable, and
democratically sound Kenya remains an enduring flame.
