M-PESA Celebrates 18 Years of Financial Innovation, Officially Unveils Investment Product

Nairobi, March 7, 2025 – Safaricom’s (NSE: SCOM) mobile financial service, M-PESA, has marked 18 years of revolutionizing digital payments and financial inclusion since its launch in 2007. Now available in over 170 countries, M-PESA serves more than 70 million customers and supports over one million businesses and agents across Africa.

With over 55,000 integrations on its Daraja platform and a network of 100,000 developers, M-PESA has become Africa’s largest fintech solution, processing close to 100 million transactions daily with a capacity of 4,000 transactions per second.

To celebrate this milestone, M-PESA has launched a series of stakeholder engagements, reaffirming Safaricom’s commitment to a secure and innovative financial ecosystem. CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa emphasized M-PESA’s role in driving financial inclusion and economic growth through technology, particularly as smartphone adoption rises.

In line with this evolution, M-PESA launched the Super App and Business App in 2021, enabling seamless digital transactions.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, Safaricom has introduced Ziidi, an investment platform with a Money Market Fund that has already attracted over one million opt-ins, with plans to roll out Shariah-compliant investment options.

Chief Financial Services Officer Esther Waititu highlighted M-PESA’s continued expansion as a comprehensive financial hub.

With its focus on innovation and financial empowerment, M-PESA remains committed to shaping the future of mobile finance across Africa.
