In a high-profile press conference held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi, Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance, spearheaded the “Okoa Katiba” initiative, advocating for urgent reforms across Kenya’s political, social, and economic sectors. The event brought together key opposition figures, including Eugene Wamalwa of the DAP-Kenya Party, Peter Munya from PNU, and Jeremiah Kioni of the Jubilee Party, who collectively criticized the current administration’s policies.
Musyoka’s panel strongly condemned the new university funding model, describing it as discriminatory and detrimental to students from less privileged backgrounds. They argued that the policy exacerbates educational inequality and imposes undue financial burdens on families.
Eugene Wamalwa expressed discontent with the 2023 and 2024 finance bills, which he claimed failed to address economic disparities. He highlighted the troubling state of over 300 young individuals found distressed at a city morgue and called for adherence to constitutional principles, echoing Chief Justice David Maraga’s emphasis on constitutional fidelity.
Peter Munya criticized the government’s approach to education funding, describing it as oppressive and a significant barrier for poor families trying to access higher education. He stressed the need for a more equitable system that does not place undue financial strain on families.
Jeremiah Kioni highlighted the high cost of living and criticized internal party dynamics, warning against potential manipulation by President Ruto. He also pointed to the unresolved case of Wairimu Mwangi, who died under suspicious circumstances, as indicative of governmental neglect.
The press conference underscored a unified call for reforms, with opposition leaders stressing the need for greater transparency, adherence to constitutional principles, and policies that promote socio-economic fairness. Their critique of the current administration aimed at safeguarding Kenya’s democratic integrity and ensuring equitable development for all citizens.
