At the United Nations Office in Nairobi, the stage was set for a landmark event: the African Youth Conference, themed "Breaking Barriers Through Intergenerational Dialogue." Hosted by the Oslo Center and the Muslim World League (MWL), the conference drew leaders, dignitaries, and eager youth from across the continent.
As anticipation filled the grand hall, H.E. Hon. Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka stepped to the podium, his commanding presence eliciting a profound sense of respect. Addressing the audience with sincerity, he extended his gratitude to key figures such as the MWL Secretary General, Finn Jarle Rode, and Ms. Phoebe Mungai of The Oslo Center Kenya and Somalia, acknowledging their crucial roles in organizing the event.
Dr. Musyoka highlighted the significance of the day’s theme, asserting that Africa’s youthful population represents not just the future, but the present, with immense potential awaiting harnessing through effective intergenerational dialogue. He reflected on recent unrest in Kenya, where peaceful youth-led protests against governance failures had been met with severe repression, resulting in the loss of over 300 lives. Despite these tragedies, the youth had driven substantial changes, reshaping Kenya’s political landscape.
The core message of Dr. Musyoka’s speech was the urgent need for governments to engage youth meaningfully, advocating for a "New Deal" that recognizes their vital role in shaping the future. Drawing on Robert F. Kennedy’s insights, he called for a future where the wisdom of the elderly and the creativity of youth work in tandem.
As he concluded, Dr. Musyoka’s words inspired a renewed commitment to fostering genuine engagement and impactful outcomes. The conference was set to embark on a transformative journey, bridging generational divides and championing a new era of collaboration and progress.
