NAIROBI,

East Member of Parliament and Nairobi Gubernatorial hopeful Babu Owino this
evening stormed the Nairobi Central Police Station, demanding the immediate
release of dozens of youths arrested during day-long street demonstrations. The
protests, organized by Gen Z activists and civil society groups, were held to
commemorate the second anniversary of the historic June 25, 2024,
anti-government uprising. True to his pre-demonstration pledge, the vocal
lawmaker arrived at the station as dusk fell, accompanied by a team of legal
minds to offer free legal aid and secure the freedom of those caught up in the
law enforcement sweep.
Hours
before the memorial processions kicked off across the Central Business District
(CBD), Babu Owino had released a stern video statement warning the state
against high-handedness and profiling of young citizens. "I know, as
usual, police officers will target our brothers and sisters for arrest under
this regime," Owino stated earlier in the day. "In case anybody is
arrested, nobody should worry. As Babu Owino, together with a competent team of
advocates, we will ensure that you are free." Witnesses at Central Police
Station described a high-stakes evening standoff as the MP engaged senior
station commanders, insisting that the right to peaceful assembly, picketing,
and remembrance is securely anchored under Article 37 of the Constitution of
Kenya.
The June
25th anniversary holds deep emotional and political weight in Kenya, marking
two years since thousands of young citizens breached Parliament to oppose
sweeping tax increases in the 2024 Finance Bill. While the Interior Ministry,
led by Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, had promised that police would
facilitate peaceful processions, parts of the city witnessed running battles
and teargas deployment as human rights groups monitored the unfolding events.
Human rights bodies, including the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), had earlier
issued strict guidelines warning individual police officers against arbitrary
abductions, masks, or the use of excessive force.
By
storming the police station late in the evening to stand with the detained
youth, Babu Owino continues to aggressively position himself as a fierce ally
of the youth movement and a chief challenger to the current city leadership
ahead of the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race. Legal teams remain camped at the
station tonight, and The County Diary will continue to bring you live updates
as more details emerge on the status of the detainees.
