Nairobi, 23 January 2026: Thousands of Kakamega residents are expected to benefit from a free two-day medical camp scheduled for February 17–18, 2026, at the Bukhungu Sports Stadium, with city lawyer and senior counsel Micheal Osundwa Sakwa presiding as chief guest. The open-air medical outreach is expected to draw between 5,000 and 10,000 residents from across the county, including women and youth groups, boda boda operators and elderly citizens who often struggle to access affordable healthcare.
Speaking ahead of the event, Osundwa said the medical camp is aimed at easing the burden faced by families affected by preventable and treatable illnesses. He said access to healthcare should not be a privilege but a right for all residents. “Many people suffer in silence because they cannot afford medical services. This camp is about restoring hope and dignity by bringing care closer to the people,” Osundwa said.
Osundwa, who was
runner-up in the 2022 Kakamega gubernatorial contest, is known for his
long-standing involvement in community development initiatives. Through public
benefit organisations (PBOs), he has supported capacity building and
empowerment programmes targeting youth and women, as well as small-scale
income-generating projects across the county.
During the two-day
exercise, residents will be screened and treated free of charge for a range of
conditions, including skin, eye and ear ailments, as well as other
non-communicable diseases. Qualified medical professionals will be on site to
conduct examinations, provide treatment and issue referrals where necessary.
Local event coordinator Dr Masengeli said preparations are in advanced stages, noting that all logistical arrangements have been put in place to accommodate the large number of expected participants.“We anticipate a huge turnout from different parts of the county. Funds permitting, attendees will also be offered refreshments after screening, with light outdoor music allowed to create a friendly atmosphere,” Dr Masengeli said.
The programme will
include brief addresses by organisers and PBO federation leaders, culminating
in a closing address by the guest of honour, Senior Counsel Micheal Osundwa
Sakwa.
