On Sunday, 25th January 2026, the Royal Nairobi Golf Club played host to a historic moment in Kenyan sports the grand finale of the inaugural PGK Equator Tour. This remarkable event not only marked the conclusion of the first season but also symbolized the dawn of a new era for Kenyan golf. The ceremony, attended by dignitaries, sponsors, players, and passionate fans, was a celebration of talent, dedication, and the promising future of the sport in the country.
Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, CBS, from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, delivered a powerful speech during the event. Reflecting on the journey of the PGK Equator Tour, he took the audience through a remarkable adventure that began in July 2025 at the Ruiru Sports Club. The tour had since traveled across Kenya, from Limuru to Mt. Kipipiri, through the breathtaking Great Rift Valley, Nakuru, Diamonds Leisure, Sigona, and finally, to the prestigious Royal Nairobi Golf Club. With every stop, the tour has left an indelible mark on the golfing landscape, showcasing Kenya’s rich golfing heritage and immense potential.
Mwangi commended the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) for their decades of hard work in building a thriving golfing platform. Their commitment to nurturing confident, disciplined, and world-class golfers through mentorship programs, fitness training, and mental health support has paved the way for a promising future. "Your performances have been outstanding," Mwangi said, lauding the players for their passion, resilience, and skill qualities that continue to raise the bar for Kenyan golf.
The support from sponsors and partners, including NCBA Bank, Safaricom, Visa, Britam, Kenya Airways, Johnnie Walker, and Computech, was also acknowledged. Mwangi emphasized that their contribution went beyond sponsorship; it was a testament to their belief in Kenya’s sporting potential and commitment to nurturing homegrown talent. He expressed optimism about the government's ongoing review of the Sports Act and Policy, which aims to deepen the involvement of private sector players in sports development.
In his closing remarks, Mwangi issued a challenge to Kenyan golfers, urging them to aim higher. "You have the skills to compete with the world’s elite," he said, encouraging players to use the PGK Equator Tour as a stepping stone toward the prestigious Magical Kenya Open and beyond.
As the first edition of the PGK Equator Tour drew to a close, it was clear that this was just the beginning. Kenya’s golfing future is brighter than ever, and the tour has already proven to be a catalyst for growth, unity, and sporting excellence. "Let’s keep the spirit of golf alive, vibrant, and unstoppable in Kenya!" Mwangi concluded, leaving the audience inspired and eager for the next chapter in Kenyan golf.
