Nairobi, 22nd January 2025 - Earlier today, the Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) held its first National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of 2025 under the leadership of its party leader. The meeting was a pivotal moment for the party, focusing on strategic priorities and resolutions designed to strengthen WDM’s role in Kenya’s political landscape. Central to the discussions was the endorsement of the party leader's decision to expel Hon. Farah Maalim as Deputy Party Leader, a move first announced on January 15, 2025. Maalim’s removal was attributed to repeated violations of the Wiper Party Constitution and public statements considered hate speech. The party leader reiterated WDM’s commitment to maintaining unity, discipline, and adherence to its core principles, signaling a firm stance against actions that undermine party integrity.
The NEC meeting also turned its attention to national issues, notably the pressing need for electoral reforms. WDM announced its readiness to lead nationwide demonstrations by the end of March should there be no significant progress toward reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The party emphasized that a credible and transparent IEBC is vital for ensuring free and fair elections, calling on stakeholders to prioritize this reform. "The IEBC is a cornerstone of our democracy," the party leader noted, underlining the importance of public confidence in electoral institutions.
Internally, the party is set to strengthen its structures through organized elections at various levels, culminating in a National Delegates Convention. This process aims to enhance grassroots representation and build a more robust organizational framework. In addition, WDM unveiled plans to expand its national presence through recruitment rallies targeting all regions of the country. These rallies will focus not only on recruiting new members but also on issuing National Identity Cards and encouraging voter registration, especially among Kenya’s youth.
Generation Z and first-time voters were a specific focus of the NEC’s agenda, with the party leader urging young people to embrace their civic responsibilities. “The future belongs to those who participate,” the leader emphasized, calling on all Kenyans to obtain their IDs and register as voters. The recruitment drive aligns with WDM’s vision of empowering citizens to play an active role in decision-making processes that shape the nation.
As WDM sets this ambitious course for 2025, its leadership remains optimistic about the party’s ability to unite Kenyans under its banner of justice, progress, and accountability. The NEC meeting marked the beginning of a year-long effort to solidify WDM’s influence at both grassroots and national levels. By addressing internal challenges, promoting voter engagement, and pushing for necessary reforms, the party aims to position itself as a leading force in Kenya’s political arena.
With the NEC’s full support, the Wiper Democratic Movement is poised to implement its 2025 agenda, reinforcing its relevance and commitment to the democratic ideals that resonate with Kenyans nationwide.
