Nairobi 12th January 2025 -  Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has raised the alarm over the troubling state of the nation, questioning the government's ability to safeguard its citizens amidst a wave of abductions and unexplained deaths. Muturi, a member of the Kenya Kwanza coalition, joined the alliance on the promise that it would uphold the principles of justice and service to Kenyans. However, he now finds himself confronting the same issues he once accused past regimes of allowing—enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings.

In an emotional statement, Muturi revealed his personal ordeal, recounting how his son was abducted during the spate of disappearances that followed the Gen Z revolts in June last year. Despite holding the position of Attorney General at the time, Muturi was unable to trace his son, who remained missing for months. His eventual release by unknown forces came without explanation or charges, leaving Muturi and his family in anguish.

Muturi criticized the security apparatus for failing to prevent these abductions, which often occur in full public view, and challenged the Inspector General of Police's claim of ignorance regarding the whereabouts of those abducted. “It is not possible for the government to say it knows nothing about these abductions. That is an abdication of its duty to protect the lives and property of Kenyans,” he stated during a funeral in Embu on January 3, 2025.

He called for transparency, urging the government to disclose how many youths have been abducted, how many have been released, and the fate of those still missing. While commending the recent release of some detainees following public outcry, he emphasized that this was insufficient and demanded accountability for the perpetrators of these violations.

Muturi further warned that unchecked abductions and human rights abuses risk plunging the country into chaos. He urged the government to uphold its cardinal responsibility to protect its citizens and called for honest, open dialogue to find a lasting solution. “The state must act decisively to end this crisis, prosecute those responsible, and ensure the immediate release of all individuals held in illegal captivity,” he concluded.

As Kenya watches, Muturi’s bold statement could signal the beginning of a broader push for accountability and justice within the government he serves.
