On a bright afternoon, the African Institute for Health and Development (AIHD) marked a significant milestone—the 20th anniversary of its founding and the launch of its new strategic plan. The celebration, held at the institute’s headquarters, was attended by key figures in the health sector, including Mary Muthoni Muriuki, CBS, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards.

In her keynote address, Muthoni Muriuki reflected on AIHD's unwavering commitment to improving health across Kenya. “Today, we celebrate not just two decades of work but the countless lives transformed through dedication, collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of healthier communities,” she said. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to government ministries, both national and county, development partners, and stakeholders who have supported AIHD’s mission over the years.

Founded with a vision to transform the health landscape, AIHD has focused on evidence-based programming, research, training, and advocacy on health and development issues tailored to the African context. The institute has played a crucial role in policy formulation on critical issues, including health, social protection, HIV/AIDS, poverty alleviation, gender equality, nutrition, and health promotion. Over the past two decades, notable achievements include a significant reduction in the disease burden and enhanced community engagement and empowerment through capacity building.

As the world faces new health and socio-economic challenges, AIHD continues to innovate and adapt. Muthoni Muriuki highlighted the importance of leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to address these issues. “We must join this journey together—share knowledge, support one another, and remain steadfast in our quest for healthier communities,” she urged. She emphasized that through strategic interventions like the “Epuka Uchafu” initiative and other enhanced community health programs, they can confront and overcome challenges collectively.

Joining Muthoni Muriuki was Nominated Senator Catherine Muyeka Mumma, representing the ODM party. In her remarks, Mumma called attention to an often-overlooked issue: teenage pregnancies. “This is not just a health concern; it’s a neglected crisis that requires our urgent attention,” she stated. She urged the audience to rally support for initiatives that address this issue, emphasizing that investing in the health and future of young people is vital for the nation’s progress.

The celebration concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment among attendees. As AIHD embarks on its next chapter, the collaborative spirit and dedication to innovation in health and development promise a brighter, healthier future for communities across Kenya. Together, stakeholders left the event inspired to continue their critical work in building a healthier society for all.
