NAIROBI, KENYA, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2026 - Deputy
President Prof. Kithure Kindiki presided over the official opening of the 4th
Correctional Services Week in Nairobi, calling attention to the transformative
role of technology, rehabilitation and environmental sustainability in modern
correctional services.
The three-day event, running from October 13 to 15,
is being held under the theme, “Transforming Correctional Services through
Technology and Green Solutions.” It brings together correctional officers, government
representatives, institutional leaders, development partners and other
stakeholders to reflect on reforms aimed at improving service delivery across
correctional facilities.
The event highlights the growing importance of
artificial intelligence, data analytics and other emerging technologies in
strengthening operational planning, identifying service delivery gaps,
improving rehabilitation programmes and ensuring the effective use of limited
resources.
As correctional institutions embrace digital transformation,
the need to protect personal data, uphold human dignity and safeguard the
rights and welfare of people under correctional supervision remains paramount.
Environmental sustainability also features
prominently in the discussions, with emphasis on renewable energy, rainwater
harvesting, water conservation, climate-smart agriculture and tree growing.
These initiatives offer opportunities to reduce operational costs, improve
resource efficiency and strengthen resilience to climate change.
The leadership of the State Department for
Correctional Services, including Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Muhia-Beacco
and Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Mwiti Aranduh, remains central to
advancing institutional reforms, professional standards and rehabilitation
initiatives.
The participation of government agencies,
development partners and other invited guests underscores the importance of
collaboration in building a correctional system that balances security,
accountability, rehabilitation and environmental responsibility.
As the week progresses, stakeholders are expected to
continue exploring practical approaches to modernising correctional operations
while supporting the successful reintegration of offenders into society.
The Nairobi gathering provides an important platform
for exchanging ideas, showcasing innovations and strengthening partnerships
that can help shape the future of Kenya’s correctional services.
Ultimately, the initiative reinforces the need for a
correctional system that embraces innovation, protects human dignity and places
sustainable development at the centre of institutional transformation.
