Nairobi, Kenya 9th May 2026 Motorists and commuters in Nairobi have been advised to plan for significant travel disruptions as the government announces the closure of several key roads ahead of the high-profile Africa Forward Summit.
The summit, scheduled to take place on May 11th and
12th, 2026, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), will be a
major diplomatic event co-chaired by President William Ruto and French
President Emmanuel Macron. The arrival of global leaders, including UN
Secretary-General António Guterres and AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali
Youssouf, has necessitated a massive security and logistical operation within
the capital.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud,
speaking during a joint press briefing with Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga,
confirmed that several arteries within the Central Business District (CBD) will
be completely inaccessible to the public. The most affected routes include City Hall Way, Harambee Avenue, and
Parliament Road, which will be cordoned off to facilitate the movement
of heads of state and official delegations.
Beyond the CBD, major highways will also feel the
impact. Commander Mohamud noted that Mombasa
Road, Thika Road, and Limuru Road will experience temporary disruptions
and partial closures. Traffic is expected to be stopped intermittently to allow
for the passage of presidential motorcades.
“There will also be restricted access to certain
zones for both vehicles and pedestrians, particularly around hotels hosting
international delegates,” Mohamud stated.
Despite the looming gridlock, the police boss sought
to reassure the business community, noting that shops and offices will remain
open. He urged traders to continue their activities but cautioned that early
planning is essential to avoid being caught in traffic snarl-ups.
Security agencies have been placed on high alert,
with officers instructed to maintain professionalism while ensuring the safety
of the visiting dignitaries. As Nairobi prepares to take center stage in
continental diplomacy, residents are encouraged to use alternative routes and
stay updated on further traffic advisories throughout the summit duration.
