CABINET SECRETARIES UNDER PRESSURE AS LINDA MWANANCHI BRIGADE DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY FOR UTUMISHI GIRLS ACADEMY TRAGEDY

By Maximilla Wafula

NAIROBI, KENYA - Pressure is mounting on the government to guarantee the safety of learners across Kenya following a horrific dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy that claimed the lives of 16 students and left 79 others injured. In the wake of the tragedy, the Linda Mwananchi Brigade issuing a stern press briefing led by Faith Lukosi has issued an ultimatum to top government officials, demanding a transparent investigation and a comprehensive overhaul of school safety protocols nationwide.

The Linda Mwananchi Brigade took a hardline stance against administrative inertia, directly challenging Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to take personal responsibility for the systemic failures leading up to the disaster. Speaking during the address, Faith Lukosi and other representatives warned that any delays in establishing the facts or shielding negligent individuals from accountability would represent a severe failure of leadership.

"If decisive action is not taken swiftly to address this preventable catastrophe, both Cabinet Secretaries must consider stepping down from their respective offices," Lukosi declared on behalf of the Linda Mwananchi Brigade during the briefing.

Beyond seeking immediate accountability for the Utumishi Girls Academy inferno, the group is pushing for long-term structural reforms in Kenya’s education sector. They are urging the Ministry of Education to urgently commission a nationwide fire safety audit across all boarding institutions. According to the brigade, the audit is a critical and non-negotiable step to identifying structural vulnerabilities, preventing future tragedies, and ensuring that no other family has to endure the pain of losing a child to a school fire.

As police and fire investigators continue to comb through the debris of the destroyed dormitory to determine the precise cause of the inferno, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the state's regulatory oversight. With grief turning into community-wide outrage, the government faces an uphill task to restore public confidence in the safety infrastructure of the country’s learning institutions.
