Why Wamaiyu Musical Repertoire Eludes Contemporary Listeners

By KITOVOTO MUTINDA  The lyrics of the traditional Kamba songs, especially those performed by the celebrated artist Wamaiyu, often elude contemporary listeners. Wamaiyu possesses an extraordinary repertoire of over a thousand songs, many of which date back to the 1940s. In that era the music served purely social functions—celebrating life, courting women, and honoring fellow singers rather than commenting on politics or elections. Because modern audiences lack the historical context, they sometimes misinterpret Wamaiyu’s renditions of these older pieces as veiled political statements. This misunderstanding overlooks the rich cultural heritage embedded in Kamba music, where proverbs, storytelling, and communal participation convey moral values and collective memory.Preserving and explaining these songs is essential, not only to honor artists like the late Kilungya Mbore (Mwanaa Ngiti) but also to ensure that future generations appreciate the depth of Kamba cultural expre...

LSK traces the matter back to July 2020, when a Cabinet resolution sought to require all state departments to obtain approval from the Attorney General before engaging external legal counsel. That directive was successfully challenged, with the H...
