In a groundbreaking move for sustainable development in Africa, FSD Africa and the African Guarantee Fund (AGF) have joined forces to boost financing for Green Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
It outlined a comprehensive framework to propel the growth of environmentally conscious businesses through financial support, technical assistance, and capacity building.
The collaboration focuses on the development of financial products, offering partial credit guarantees for bonds and funds raised on behalf of SMEs, and organizing capacity-building events. This multifaceted approach aims to create a robust ecosystem that empowers Green SMEs, fostering access to affordable long-term funds and accelerating the transition toward a greener and more resilient economy.
Green SMEs, through financial support and business growth, are anticipated to play a pivotal role in reducing CO2 emissions. The partnership not only aligns with the goal of preserving the environment but also strives to facilitate access to finance for business growth, empowering SMEs to generate and sustain employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women.
Mark Napier, Chief Executive Officer of FSD Africa, expressed the significance of the partnership, stating, "This collaboration represents an important milestone in our efforts to foster sustainable economic development in Africa. By leveraging the strengths of FSD Africa and the African Guarantee Fund, we will actively create a robust ecosystem that empowers Green SMEs."
Jules Ngankam, AGF Group Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the priority of fostering a green economic transformation in Africa. AGF will provide financial institutions with bank fundraising guarantees, enabling access to affordable funds for loans to SMEs investing in low-carbon and climate-resilient businesses. Additionally, partial credit guarantees will enhance credit accessibility for Green SMEs, empowering them to flourish and contribute meaningfully to environmental conservation.
In addition to financial support, the collaboration includes technical assistance on green financing initiatives. This aspect is crucial for building the capacity of key stakeholders such as Governments, Financial Institutions, and Green SMEs, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sustainable development on the continent. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to reshaping Africa's financial landscape and fostering a greener, more resilient economic future.
