Kenya’s journey towards protecting children – A decade of change2012-2019 report was today unveiled. Speaking during the launch the Principal Secretary, State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, Joesph Mogosi Motari up lauded the findings of the study that led to the changes in the prevalence of VAC in Kenya between 2010-2019.
This launch lays the ground for the upcoming International Conference on Child Protection whose significance is critical and essential for the protection of children in Kenya, making the journey that Kenya has undertaken in our collective commitment towards protecting the most vulnerable among us, our children.
The first survey conducted in 2010, indicated there was a high prevalence of VAC in Kenya and served as a wake-up call for action. The findings provided the foundation upon which the National Response Plan for Ending VAC in Kenya 2018 was constructed. The second survey, conducted in 2019, was informed by the Government’s commitment to accountability obligation. In the survey we assessed the impact of interventions implemented for close to a decade since the first VACS was undertaken.
The findings indicated a notable decrease in child violence. This study has explored the significant factors that have played a pivotal role in driving this decline. It is therefore appropriate to continue investing in similar strategies which are context-fit and futuristic in nature
Our commitment to raising awareness and advocating for child rights has sparked a cultural shift. Through the "Spot It, Stop It" campaign to end Violence against Children among others in different sectors we have raised awareness and championed child rights. Communities have stopped tolerating violence, and children are more confident in reporting abuse, highlighting the positive impact of collective advocacy.
As a Ministry, we will continue to advocate and lobby for more resources from Government and engage in private public partnerships in order to scale up the various interventions that are effective and promising in preventing violence against children by disseminating this report to all relevant stakeholders and also implementation of various plans of actions in place to end VAC.
Ends...
